Custom Shed and Structure Design Projects
Consumers are prepared to pay for what THEY want. These case studies show two recent situations where we helped two different Australian shed retailers, each Quotec users, benefit from this fact, with custom shed and carport design projects.
In each case, we manually created a custom shed/carport design for our shed business client, which met their customer’s specific needs, outside the realms of shed software — and to their huge benefit.
Case Study #1:
How we turned a 40% markup into a 105% markup, with a custom, one-off carport design
A Quotec user reached out to us to create a custom manual design for a special carport design their customer had requested. We were able to take the end-customer’s vision, wants and needs, and turn it into a concept, then a reality — and a very healthy 105% markup for the shed retailer. Much more than the standard, everyday 40%.
The scenario
One of our software users (a shed retailer just like you) came to us with a hand sketch of the carport, a special design that their customer had requested, which was outside the usual, and therefore, needed a custom carport design to be created.
Here’s what happened
- We had a look at the sketch of the carport that had been drawn up, after our client, a shed retailer, came to us for help with the manual design.
- In a few hours, not days, we quoted them a design fee of $2200 (plus our normal service fee).
- Three days later, our Quotec software user (the retailer), having had approval from their customer, came back to us with the go-ahead to design the carport.
- A week later, we presented our first draft of the design.
- A few slight tweaks were made at the request of our Quotec client, and the design was finalised and signed off on by their customer.
- Soon after that, we generated the full design, had it certified by our engineer and created the BOMs ready to order.
The outcome
The end customer was happy, and the Quotec user was even happier. Because they just made a huge profit.
Instead of a standard, run-of-the-mill 40% markup, they were able to charge a very healthy 105% markup, due to the bespoke custom design. The end customer was happy to pay this premium; they were, after all, getting something created just for them. In fact, the only other choice they had was to go without, because nobody wanted to take the job on.

Want to skyrocket your margin on a custom shed/structure design sale?
If you’re business-savvy, you’ll know you can make much more money on a carport or shed that
is a one-off special design that nobody wants to do and this is your opportunity to do so.
Get in touch with us today about our custom shed designs (and other custom structure designs), for those extra-special designs that are outside of the realms of shed software — and increase your profit margin substantially by offering something that others cannot.
Can you get an 105% markup on a run-of-the-mill carport?
Nowadays, not very likely, for a standard carport. But, because this was a special one-off design, something no one else seems to want to do, the huge profit increase became a reality (and an easy one at that).
Our user saw the opportunity and reached out to us, and we got the job done. Everybody won.
Take a moment to think about the awesome word-of-mouth referrals for specialty sheds and carports to anyone who asked that customer about their carport; one great move can set off a chain of similar projects, with similar great outcomes.
Case Study #2:
One custom shed design, one happy customer, and a $29k profit for our retailer partner.
In this case our client’s customer requested a double gable shed, that was 12 x 12 metres.
We’re not sure why the customer wanted this design, (as you can easily design a 24m wide in the Quotec software), but this is what they wanted, and they were clear about that.
- Total job cost was about $65k, give or take
- Was sold for just shy of $94k
- Not a bad profit at all for a single project
Here’s what happened
- The Quotec user (a shed retailer) sent in a request to us for a special design for their customer.
- We priced the design, inclusive of the engineering certification, in consultation with the shed retailer.
- The retailer’s customer approved the quote.
- We then designed the building, and provided drawings for final approval.
- The shed retailer passed this onto their customer.
- Once final approval was given from the end-customer, we provided Bills of Material, Purchase Orders and Engineering Certification.
The outcome
- On this design the Quotec user made a substantial profit on a design that they could not otherwise make.
- And their customer was more than happy to pay for exactly what they wanted.
- It was a win-win all round that gained the shed retailer a good profit and made their customer very happy to get their exact project specs met.
